MANGALORE: The State Government has sanctioned eight acres of land to Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) near Dharmasthala to set up a centre for cattle research to develop indigenous breeds, according to executive director of the SKDRDP L.H. Manjunath. He said the centre would focus on breeding and promoting indigenous breeds of cattle. It would also provide temporary shelter for stray cattle. Experts would be appointed to manage the cattle breeding and management centre. Research would be taken up for developing by-products such as "gou arka", gobar gas, vermi-manure, and organic manure. The centre would train farmers in organic farming, he said. These activities would be under the "Kamadhenu" scheme. It had been planed to develop a corpus for the scheme. A sum of Rs. 25 lakh would be invested initially, he said. The SKDRDP had extended its rural development activities to Shimoga and Chikmagalur districts, he added.
