MANGALORE: Several teachers and educationists held a meeting here on Wednesday to send suggestions from Mangalore taluk to the House Committee on School Development Management Committees (SDMCs).
Suggestions
The committee, which was set up after the death of teacher Prema in Gadag district, had invited suggestions from various taluks about the functioning of SDMCs. The overall consensus at the meeting was that SDMCs must not be dismantled, but the system should be strengthened, Renny D'Souza, director of Valored, said. The gazette notification that governs the functioning of SDMCs should be implemented. It required the setting up of civil amenities committees at gram panchayats. These committees are empowered to look into complaints that might arise in the functioning of SDMCs. But, in many instances, these committees did not exist, or teachers were not aware that they could approach them, Mr. D'Souza said.
Awareness
So awareness should be created about the rules that govern the committees, he said and added that steps should be taken to stop political interference in the functioning of SDMCs. Another suggestion that was put forth at the meeting was that non-academic load on teachers, such as involvement in construction works, should be reduced, he said. The suggestions from the taluk would be sent to the House Committee on Thursday, Mr. D'Souza added.
