TAMBARAM
: Yet another policeman in the southern suburbs of Chennai has allegedly indulged in offensive behaviour under the influence of liquor.
The latest incident took place on Tuesday evening at Brindavan Nagar, which falls under the jurisdiction of Adambakkam in St. Thomas Mount police district.
Police said Mahalingam, a constable attached to the Adambakkam police station, had allegedly harassed Selvam, a cycle shop owner.
As arguments between the two men continued, a section of traders and a councillor in the locality went to the Adambakkam police station and urged officers to take stern action against the constable.
However, sensing trouble, the constable did not return to the police station after the incident.
Past instances
In the past couple of weeks alone, three policemen, including a Sub-Inspector, were pulled up for reporting for work under the influence of alcohol.
Departmental action was initiated against them after medical tests established that they had consumed alcohol while on duty.
