Co-optex introduces saris for the summer

USP of `Chithirai Saris' is unique weaving, exclusive designs

CHENNAI: Beat the heat with crisp and colourful cotton saris from Co-optex's `Chithirai Saris' exhibition launched on Wednesday by Handlooms and Textiles Minister N.K.K.P. Raja.

Silk-cotton blend and pure cotton saris in all hues were draped across the Co-optex Vanavil showroom to welcome the minister and early customers.

Unique weaving, exclusive designs, attractive colour combinations and a sure-fire way to keep cool are the USP of the saris on display.

Costing between Rs.60 and Rs.1500, the saris would be comfortable on the wearer and their purse, said the Minister.

He had earlier looked around the exhibition with eager salespersons unrolling saris on display to show off their colours and textures.

A few early bird customers posed for the cameras with their purchases and the Minister.

Vanavasi, Thoppur, Sirumugai, Paramakudi and Jayankondam are some regions that these saris come from, said M.P. Nirmala, Managing Director.

The collection of saris has some 100 designs in several colours, giving the customer a range above 500 to choose from, she said.

It is also hoped that similar collections would travel to Co-optex outlets in other parts of the State and the country in the course of the year. Such exhibitions have been inaugurated in Madurai and Coimbatore.

Addressing the press, Mr. Raja said Co-optex had realised a profit of Rs.2.12 crore in the financial year 2005-2006. The profit estimated for this year was Rs.2.75 crore.

Vishwanath Shegaonkar, Secretary to Government, Handlooms, Handicrafts, Textiles and Khadi Department, participated.

The usual discounts available at Co-optex, including the 20 per cent rebate, would be available to customers shopping for Chithirai Sarees, said Ms. Nirmala.

The exhibition is scheduled to continue for another 20 days at the Co-optex Vanavil showroom in Teynampet and at its showroom in L.B. Road, Adyar.
