Plea to seek release of fishermen

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government on Wednesday urged the Centre to take steps to secure the release of 12 Indian fishermen, including a Keralite, who are in the custody of LTTE in Sri Lanka.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan told presspersons here that the Director General of Police, Tamil Nadu, had informed the State that the boat and the crew, who had set out for fishing from the Neendakara port in the State on March 4, were in LTTE custody. One of the fishermen, Simon, belonged to Njarackal in Ernakulam district while the others were from Colachel in Tamil Nadu.

The Chief Minister said the Cabinet decided to sanction Rs.10,000 as immediate relief to the family of Simon. The family would also be provided with a monthly assistance of Rs.1,500.
