Search continues for a new VC

THE WAIT for a new Vice-Chancellor for the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) continues although the search committee headed by Rajyasabha member K. Kasturirangan had submitted its report a month ago.

Now, the continuation of K. Balaveera Reddy in the post has raised a storm, with the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and some academics demanding his removal.

ABVP has even questioned Dr. Reddy's powers to nominate members for the university's Senate, which even got the Chancellor's green signal.

The former Bangalore University Senate member K. Mallaiah on Wednesday charged that although Dr. Reddy turned 65 several months ago, he was continued by exploiting a technical ground (the VTU Act being silent on the superannuation age of the VC).

As per the University Grants Commission (UGC) norms, other universities in Karnataka restricted the service of VC up to 65.

In VTU's case, alleged Prof. Mallaiah, "the essence of the UGC Act has been thrown to the winds by those who should have paid attention to this matter.

The stakeholders in technical education have become mute spectators to this `academic insult."

He said the healthy practice prevailing in other universities was to hand over charge to the designated VC or the registrar or to the senior most dean on the day of retirement.
