Hyderabad: In a significant move, the Hyderabad district authorities recovered 13 acres and 20 guntas of land worth about Rs. 15 crore at Ghousnagar in Bandlaguda mandal in the old city on Wednesday. The land situated in Survey No. 82 was encroached upon by a local muscleman. As far back as 1977, the Revenue Department took possession of this surplus land. But it couldn't protect it and subsequently the land was grabbed. On a tip off that the encroacher was trying to plot and sell the land as `Mohammadia Hills', the district authorities moved in and reclaimed the land. Special Deputy Collector Babu Rao, Hyderabad RDO Hanmantha Reddy and Bandlaguda Tahsildar P. Leela took part in the operation to recover land.
Area fenced
Later, the area was fenced and boards erected declaring it as Government land. According to authorities, another 13 acres and 52 guntas of land in Survey No. 84 was intact. Hyderabad Collector R.V. Chandravadan told The Hindu that the recovered lands would be used for weaker section housing programme. As many as 50 sites with an area of 115 acres have been identified for this purpose. Since land cost is prohibitive in the city, all measures are being taken to protect the Government lands. "We have asked the Government not to regularise third-party claims on surplus land and the Registration Department is requested not to register such lands", Mr. Chandravadan said.
