Health sector facing challenges: VS

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has called upon doctors and other staff in the Government hospitals to be vigilant against the private hospital lobby that is "working against the health sector of the State." Speaking at the State-level meeting of the National Rural Health Mission-Arogya Keralam here on Wednesday, Mr. Achuthanandan said the lobby was trying to create an impression that the service in Government hospitals was poor. The Chief Minister said the Government was trying to convert the hospitals into places where the poor can walk in for treatment. — Staff Reporter

Four-year-old reunited with mother

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Four-year-old Rasiya who was found wandering at the Thiruvananthapuram Central station on April 27 was reunited with her mother on Wednesday. After getting the necessary clearance from the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) the child left for her home at Thirunamal, near Thirukkurichi in Tamil Nadu, along with her mother Reshma and uncle Babu. The personnel of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) who found her wandering at the station had handed over the child to the State Child Welfare Council after producing her before the CJM. Ms. Reshma came to know of her daughter's whereabouts after seeing the news of the girl being handed over to the Council on a Tamil TV channel. — Staff Reporter

Prisoner dead

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A 78-year-old prisoner who was undergoing life term in the Open Jail near Neyyar Dam died at Medical College Hospital on Wednesday morning. According to the police, the deceased had been identified as Joseph, son of George, residing in Wadakkancherry police station limits. Joseph was serving life term since 1987 and was shifted to the open jail in 1998. — Staff Reporter

Man arrested

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Museum police have arrested one person in connection with the attack against Chief of Programme of Jeevan TV Alappi Ashraf on Wednesday. According to the police, the attack took place in the office of the channel on Udarasirimoni Road, near Vellayambalam. The accused was identified as Pradeeep of Aruvikkara. The district unit of Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) has demanded action against those behind the attack. — Staff Reporter

Power supply disruption

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Power supply is likely to be disrupted at Enchakkal, Perunthanni, Subash Nagar, V.K.K. Nagar, Kothalam, Sreevarahom, Asan Nagar coming under Sreevarahom electrical section between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Thursday in view of maintenance works, a release from the KSEB said. — Staff Reporter
