Child census begins in State

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Child Census 2007 got under way in the State on Wednesday.

The State-level inauguration of the census was performed in the State capital jointly by Minister for Education M.A. Baby and Minister for Local Self-Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty. They visited houses opposite to the Nandavanam police camp and collected details.

The Education Minister said the census was being conducted for the planning purpose of the State and for ensuring society's participation in the development of children up to the age of 18.

New-borns would also be included in the census. Each child would be given an identification number. A comprehensive data bank of all children below 18 years would be prepared.

The purpose of the exercise was to find out in advance the factors, which stood in the way of the education of children, identify the marginalised children and ensure that children joined schools at an appropriate time. The inaugural function was attended by Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation Mayor C. Jayan Babu. Some 1.32 lakh enumerators, including volunteers from Kudumbasree and literacy workers would collect details from 82 lakh families during census.
