Lower berths for women, elders

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Following the budgetary announcement by Union Minister for Railways Lalu Prasad, allotment of lower berths in air-conditioned and sleeper class coaches for senior citizens and women has begun. Accordingly, Chief Public Relations Officer P. Krishnaiah said in a statement on Thursday that with effect from August 1, a combined quota of two lower berths per reserved coach would be earmarked for senior citizens, women aged 45 and above, pregnant women and senior citizens.

Open for booking

The quota will remain open for booking till the time of preparation of charts. Later, the unutilised quota would be released to wait-listed passengers, he said. Pregnant women will be required to submit a certificate from a registered medical practitioner while booking the ticket.

The new arrangement is over and above the existing six berths in one or two coaches and the two to four berths in first class coaches, irrespective of the age of the women.
