dated May 4, 1957: Lok Sabha session

The first session of the new Lok Sabha, beginning on May 10, will be quite exciting as many important issues are likely to come up for discussion. The report of the UN Kashmir mediator, Mr. Gunnar Jarring, the nuclear test explosions in the Pacific and the food situation in the country will dominate the general debate on the budget. The Finance Minister, Mr. T.T. Krishnamachari, will present the budget on May 15. The joint session of both Houses of Parliament will be addressed by the President on May 13. The Congress Party's nominees for the posts of Speaker and Deputy Speaker will be Mr. M. Ananthasayanam Iyengar and Sardar Hukum Singh. The Communist group is likely to elect Mr. S.A. Dange as the party leader in place of Mr. A.K. Gopalan, who will be the deputy leader.
