Over 5,000 hit by AIDS virus in Nizamabad

NIZAMABAD: Over 5,000 people, including 600 pregnant women, were detected to be carrying the HIV/AIDS virus when 1.60 lakh people were examined in the district.

The disease has been spreading rapidly here owing to heavy migration, according to T. Dinesh Kumar, Additional District Medical and Health Officer.

Comprehensive plan

Calling upon all voluntary organisations working for an AIDS-free society to intensify the awareness campaign at a meeting here on Thursday, he said a comprehensive plan was formulated to combat the dreaded disease.

He asked them to take out a torch light rally to spread awareness at all mandal headquarters.

Project Director, Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society, Manish Kumar expressed satisfaction over the efforts made by voluntary organisations in controlling the spread of the disease.

Employment

The affected people are being provided employment through the village samakhyas. A monthly stipend of Rs.100 is being given to each patient through the Indira Kranthi Patham. There is a plan to train one person for ten families to carry out campaign on HIV, according to IKP representative Sudhir Kumar.

Campaign in villages

rasad, the Lepra India Coordinator, said his organisation in association with the IKP has been conducting the AIDS-control campaign in 180 villages.

The Non-Governmental Organisations' representatives decided to conduct meeting once in three months to review the situation.

Sneha Society for Rural Reconstruction chairman S. Siddhaiah presided. Ravindranath (Siri Vennela Society), representatives from Snehalaya, Mallepalli Welfare Society, Maya Foundation, Netaji Welfare Society, Ravindra Vidya Grameenabivruddhi Samstha, Nature Society, Sahaja Service Society, Krupa Society, Sunrise Society, Chaitanya Mahila Mandali, Surya Educational Society and NCC took part.
