NEW DELHI: Nokia on Thursday unveiled seven new handsets for various segments. With these launches, the company hopes to further consolidate its position in the Indian handset market.

Stating that the new phones have been designed keeping in mind the specific needs of consumers, Nokia Senior Vice-President (Mobile Phones), Soren Petersen, said: "India is very important to Nokia and to the global mobile communications industry as a whole. One of the fastest growing markets in the world, India is also home to several Nokia facilities, including R&D and manufacturing."

The new handsets are Nokia 1200 and Nokia 1208 (both aimed at new subscribers), Nokia 1650, Nokia 2660, Nokia 2505 (for CDMA markets), Nokia 2630 and 2760. "These phones contain innovative phone-sharing technology, contemporary design and easy-to-use features suitable for all types of markets. These phones will be made available in the second and third quarters of 2007 and will be priced between Rs. 2,200 and Rs. 5,000,'' Mr. Petersen said. He said Nokia sales were likely to cross the 40-lakh mark by 2010, with half of it coming from the Asia Pacific region, including India. Half of this growth would come from emerging markets, including India and China, and the company was focusing on reducing the cost of handsets to tap most of the markets, he added.
