Puducherry: Health and Housing Minister E. Valsaraj said the Government had drawn up a programme to construct tenements at a cost of Rs 27 crore at Lambert Saravanane Nagar to meet the housing requirements of the poor people. Replying to a debate on demands for grants to various departments including Labour and Employment and Health in the Assembly on Thursday, he said the Government had also planned to construct tenements in Karaikal and Rs. 16 crore would be spent on the project. The Government would utilise the provisions of the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Management programme to reconstruct the tenements in Kuruchikuppam village in the coastal limits of Puducherry and Rs 10 crore would be spent for the scheme. Referring to steps taken to promote welfare of the workers in the Union Territory, he said the Department of Labour had already fixed minimum wages for workers in 10 categories of jobs and preliminary notification on fixing minimum wages for nine other categories of jobs had also been issued.
Survey on child labour
One more survey would be conducted soon to assess the prevalence of child labour as the Government was keen to abolish the menace of child labour.
