Puducherry
Special Correspondent
Puducherry: A super-speciality hospital will be set up at Kovilpathu in Karaikal on a 37-acre site being acquired for the purpose, Health Minister E. Valsaraj has said. Mr. Valsaraj said in the Territorial Assembly that the hospital would have 500 beds. The administration was keen to give equal importance in providing quality health care services in Karaikal district. He said a new surgical complex with four operating tables and other modern equipment would be commissioned during this year in the Government General Hospital in Karaikal. On the shortage of doctors in government hospitals in the Union Territory, Mr. Valsaraj said the Government had been urging the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to fill vacancies. The administration, on its part, was appointing qualified doctors on contract basis to ensure that there was no dislocation of services in the hospitals. These doctors were given emoluments on par with regular staff.
Cath lab
The Rs. 5-crore Cath lab (in the Department of Cardiology) set up in the Indira Gandhi Government General hospital and PG Institute (IGGHPGI) here would go on stream in June. Clinics for adolescents would be opened to provide quality health care for youngsters. They would function on Saturdays in all the Community Health, Primary Health and Sub Centres between 10 and 11 a.m.
Diabetic care centre
A separate diabetic care centre would be opened in Puducherry for diabetics. A comprehensive health insurance scheme would be introduced in Mahe and Yanam regions, where there are not enough qualified doctors and specialists.
