TENSE SITUATION: Police pacifying villagers of Manaveli in Ariankuppam on Thursday.
PUDUCHERRY: Traffic on the Cuddalore road was disrupted during rush hour on Thursday morning following a road blockade by villagers of Manaveli in Ariankuppam. The villagers were seeking police action against those responsible for the alleged attack on a man from their village. People from the village came out in large numbers and squatted along the route at Ariankuppam junction for around an hour disrupting traffic movement. They dispersed only after police assured them of action against the culprit. The villagers complained that Bhaskar was assaulted by a group of people living in the fishing hamlet of Veerampattinam on Tuesday evening. He was treated at the General Hospital for cut injuries and discharged later. According to police, Bhaskar was assaulted when he asked a group of people whom he found consuming liquor on a coconut farm to vacate the place. This led to an argument with the group, following which he was assaulted.
Four held
Later in the day, police arrested four people suspected to have been involved in the assault. The area was tense till late in the afternoon with vehicles going towards Veerampattinam blocked by the people from Ariankuppam even after they withdrew the road roko. They allowed the vehicles to move only after they were informed about the arrests.
Peace talks
Police later organised peace talks between the representatives of the two villages in the presence of Ariankuppam legislator P. K R Anantharaman of the PMK, which resulted in an agreement not to precipitate tension. In the past, there have been violent clashes between the people of two villages. Anticipating trouble, top officers arranged for the police to be deployed in strength.
