Trekking expedition leaves Tiruchi

TIRUCHI: It was a towering aspiration, quite literally. Their send off ceremony was equally enthusiastic with a series of advice from the Mayor, Sarubala R. Tondaiman.

The expedition team of Science and Adventure Club to the Himalayas was formally given a send off on Thursday. Ms. Tondaiman handed them the National flag. It will be planted at Baby Shivling, which is at the height of 18,600 ft.

Addressing the 30 students, who were part of the trekking team, Ms. Tondaiman urged them to carry on the message of environmental protection during their 20-day expedition. The students were advised against littering the snow capped mountains with plastic.

Pointing to the fast depletion of Ozone layer, Ms. Tondaiman called for active participation in workshops and seminar on the need for preserving ecology.

"Sea level is rising at an extremely fast rate owing to reduction of glaciers. Students can pass on the message of using eco-friendly gadgets for daily needs," she said.

About 25 first-timers underwent training to increase stamina for the long haul by jogging and mountaineering on nearby hillocks.

"Rigorous exercises for three months prior to the expedition strengthen the muscles," says Vrinda Ramanan, co-founder of the club.
