ISLAMABAD: Against the backdrop of a fresh round of protests on Thursday, the legal battle over ousted Chief Justice Ifthikar Chaudhary continued with lawyers on both sides arguing objections raised by the defence against the judicial panel that is hearing the case. The Supreme Judicial Council has not yet taken up the substance of the reference against the Chief Justice. After eight hearings devoted to arguments by the defence on Mr. Chaudhary's preliminary objections to the Constitution, composition and competence of the panel to hear the reference, it was the turn of a high-powered team of lawyers to begin arguments for the Government in the latest session. Separate petition
The five-member panel turned down again a demand by the defence for a stay on its proceedings until the Supreme Court decides a separate petition before it by Mr. Chaudhary on the same issues. The Government team will continue with its arguments at the next hearing on May 9. Political parties have turned their attention to Lahore, where Mr. Chaudhary is expected to address the city bar association. Over the last few weeks, he has travelled to Sindh and Peshawar in the North-West Frontier Province, to speak to lawyers who have rallied in his defence since March 9. Each of these occasions has been a massive show of solidarity for Mr. Chaudhary, with enthusiastic participation by political parties alongside the legal community. Lawyers and Opposition parties are pouring all efforts into ensuring that the event in Lahore is a big show of strength.
