Letters to the Editor
This refers to the op-ed page article `Hydel projects and perils: an instance in Kerala' by V.R. Krishna Iyer (May 3). I have always believed that hydel power does no harm to the nation. But the article has highlighted the many problems: the cost involved not just the economic cost but the irrecoverable loss of habitat of endangered animal and plant species, and many more unexplored gifts of nature.
N. Giridar,
* * * On energy, ecology, and egalitarianism various theories and opinions of leaders in politics, science, and sociology vary to the extent of confusing the average citizen. The latter, resigned to his fate, hopes there will be solutions too. Of course, there will always be cautionary voices such as those of Justice Krishna Iyer.
G. Swaminathan,
* * * All activities that badly affect the environment on earth are caused by human beings. So what is the solution? Do we push them out of the earth?
R. Ganesan,
