LAURELS ALL THE WAY: Members of the State team who won medals at the first Dubai Open International Taekwondo Championship.
Bangalore: Our cricketers may have come back only with ignominy from the World Cup 2007, but a bunch of plucky youngsters from Karnataka returned with a clutch of medals from the first Dubai Open International Taekwondo Championship held recently. Students, who won medals, are Pavan K. (three gold), Aditya Ashwin (one silver), Anshuman D. (two gold), Vikram A. (one gold, one silver, one bronze) and Suhas V. (one gold). The Karnataka Amateur Taekwondo Association (KATA) was formed in 1987 in Bangalore and has trained over 2,000 students. Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that is practised by anyone between three and 65. KATA conducted an international Taekwondo championship in Bangalore in 2004 in which five countries participated.
