KARAIKUDI: Rajalingam's 52nd minute strike helped Solar Football Club, Nilakottai defeat Youth Football Club, Krishnagiri and enter the pre-quarterfinals of the 24th Champion Club football tournament, for the Universal Trophy, at Krishna stadium, Velangudi near Karaikudi on Thursday. In another match, St. Joseph's College, Tiruchi beat Sattur Town Football Club 3-0 via the tie-breaker, after the teams were locked goalless in the regulation time. Mohamed Habib, Gowtham and Gopi scored for St. Joseph's.
Armed Police advances
Armed Police, Madurai beat Maan Mark Basketball Club, Madurai 53-42 to enter the men's quarterfinals of the fifth annual Arokya Trophy State-level basketball tournament in Virudhunagar on Thursday.

Wednesday evening matches could not be played due to heavy downpour. Nageswaran scalps six
Off-spinner Nageswaran's six for 35-helped TCPL CC, Koviloor carve out a 200-run victory over Alagappa Chettiar College of Engineering and Technology in the Sivagangai DCA `A' division on league at Karaikudi recently. Basketball tournament
The Tamilnad Mercantile Bank Trophy All India basketball tournament, organised jointly by Tuticorin Basketball Club and Tuticorin District Basketball Association, will get underway at Tharuvai Stadium, Tuticorin on Saturday. Indian Army (Delhi), Tamil Nadu State team, KSEB, BSNL (Thiruvananthapuram), Army Signals (Delhi), HAL (Bangalore), Punjab State team, South Central Railway, A.O.C (Secunderabad), Vijaya Bank (Bangalore), S.E. Central Railway (Chhattisgarh) and Port Trust (Tuticorin) will play in the men's section. Central Railway, Southern Railway, Western Railway, South Central Railway, South Western Railway, KSEB and LMR BB Club (Erode) are in the women's section. The tournament will be played on league-cum-knock out basis.
Senthil Kumar is champion
R. Senthil Kumar lifted a total of 647.5kg to win the title in 86kg category at the Tiruchi District strength lifting championship at Tiruchi recently. The results: (winners only): 50kg: K. Johnson (Vandu gym, 467.5kg); 55kg: P. Karthik (Dr. Madankumar gym, 490 kg); 60kg: H. Nouzath (Premier gym, 552.5kg); 66 kg: Senthil (Vandu gym, 560kg); 72kg: T.A.
