Aswath is champion

Coimbatore: National sub-junior champion R. Aswath of Chennai scored an exciting 36-move win over P. Shyam Nikil of Madurai in the final round to emerge champion of the LA Group FIDE-rated chess tournament organised by Global Chess Academy at the Jenney Club here on Thursday.

Aswath, who required just half a point for the title, offered a draw, which Nikil declined. But Aswath kept his cool, and finally managed to trap his opponent for the title.

Vishnu Prasanna and Ram S. Krishnan from Chennai finished second and third respectively.
