Emphatic win for SBT

Principal Correspondent

KOZHIKODE: SBT scored an emphatic 3-0 win over Central Excise to top Group `A' in the Western Union State football league at the Corporation Stadium here on Thursday.

Both the teams had already ensured their semifinal berths, but their respective opponents will be known only after the last league match, to be played between Viva Kerala and Cochin Port Trust on Friday.

As the scoreline would suggest, it was a game dominated by SBT, especially in the second half. Central Excise had showed some promise early on in the match, even creating a couple of scoring opportunities, before allowing the Thiruvananthapuram team to take control.

Fine move

Just when the first half seemed to end without a goal being scored, came a fine move, in the injury time, orchestrated by Martin John and featuring M.A. Abdul Hakkim and A.G. Abdul Salam, that beat the Central Excise defence.

Martin himself gave the finishing touch to put the former champion ahead.

The bankmen looked even keener to attack in the second half, while the Kochi side struggled to get the ball past beyond its half. Hakkim made it 2-0 in the 64th minute, scooping a rebound home from the right edge of the box.

Then Aslam, who played with a lot of fire up front for the bankmen, scored the third goal in the 85th minute, after receiving a fine through ball from S. Anil Kumar.

Football trials

The trials to select the Ernakulam under-13 football probables will be held at the Sacred Heart College Ground, Thevara, on May 5 and 6 at 7 a.m. on both days. The selected players will undergo the district coaching camp organised by the EDFA.

Coaching camp

Terry Mann, a coach from England's Football Association, will conduct a 20-day coaching camp at the Fort Kochi Parade Ground from May 5. Interested boys are to report for the camp, organised by Sealine Santos FC, at 6.30 a.m. on May 5. V.H.M. Rafeque, the president of the Sealine Santos FC, will inaugurate the camp.
