KORAPUT: Schools controlled by Village Education Committees (VEC) and managed by children through strong school cabinets are the future realities in Koraput district. Prasant Kumar Das, DPC of DPEP was sharing these proposals with the local NGOs during the first ever collaboration meeting between DPEP, UNICEF & NGOs for making `Education for all' a reality in the district. Admitting the fact that there were many gaps in the process of making schools child-friendly and community based, he appealed to the NGOs to mobilise the community for the purpose. Interested and capable NGOs will be given full control over the newly launched programme of Sarva Sikhya Abhiyan (SSA). Under this programme one Residential Bridge Course Centre in each of the 14 blocks and one non-residential Bridge Course Centre in each of the 226 panchayats will be opened exclusively for schoolchildren. Scattered children, Child labourers and orphans will be brought into these centres on priority basis by the NGOs, he said. Non-attendance of VEC members in their monthly meetings was a great concern and a stumbling block for ensuring their ownership on the activities of the school. Hence the NGOs now will take the responsibility= to orient the VECs on their roles and responsibility for managing schools effectively. In addition to this the NGOs would also be involved in strengthening the school cabinets and make it working. The resolution made by the children in the monthly meetings of the school cabinet would be taken seriously and measures will also be taken to meet the needs of the school, Mr, Das said. Lalita Patnaik, Amarjit Jena and Lopamudra Tripathy from UNICEF also participated in the discussion.
