Three electrocuted

GUNTUR: Three persons were electrocuted at Nizampatnam in Guntur district while they were pulling a chariot of a local deity Mogadaramma as part of annual festivities on Thursday. Nine persons suffered burns. A brass plate fixed to the chariot came in contact with a live domestic power supply wire at the old customs office junction at 5.30 a.m. leading to the accident. Repalle Circle Inspector T. Murali Krishna said that the victims were identified as Mopidevi Ramana Rao (38) and Golla Venkateswarlu (30) and Chinta Mallikarjuna Rao (23). - Staff Reporter

Child killed in fire

NIZAMABAD: A three-year-old child was burnt alive, five persons sustained severe burns and 15 houses were destroyed in a fire at Chakaliwada in Machareddy mandal on Thursday. The Machareddy police said the reason for the cause was not known. Fire engine from Kamareddy brought the flames under control. The girl Chakali Poojitha died. Revenue and police officials taking part in Praja Patham at a nearby village rushed to the spot and supervised the rescue and relief operations. - Staff Reporter,

Bandaru's plea to Chief Minister

HYDERABAD: Bharatiya Janata Party State president Bandaru Dattatreya on Thursday urged Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to file an intervening application in the Supreme Court in the OBC case on behalf of Andhra Pradesh. Free eye camp held

Kakinada: Some 360 people were screened for various eye ailments at the free camp organised at Sri Viswa Vignana Adhyatmika Peetham at Chitrada near here on Wednesday.

It was held under the aegis of the Umar Alisha Rural Development Trust. Doctors from Sri Kiran Eye Hospital offered their services. Peetham chief Umar Alisha distributed spectacles to 45 persons.

Kakinada: Kamidi Veerraju, 30, was killed when the tractor he was driving lost control and fell into a roadside tank near Tamarapalli village under Pamarru police station limits on Thursday.

BHIMAVARAM: Five persons travelling by an autorickshaw were injured when the vehicle overturned at Narsaiah Agraharam here on Thursday. The accident occurred when the driver tried to avoid hitting pedestrians. - Staff Reporter

ELURU: Physically challenged persons staged a dharna at the Collectorate here on Thursday under the aegis of the Vikalangula Samkshema Seva Sangham seeking solution to their problems. Lifer for killing wife

ONGOLE: District and Sessions Judge B. Siva Sankara Rao on Thursday convicted T. Subba Rao for uxoricide and sentenced him to undergo life imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs. 100.

Subba Rao of Pamuru married Pushpavathi 10 years ago. Suspecting the fidelity of his wife, Rao attacked her with a knife at his kirana shop on November 5, 2005. On information, the police rushed to the place. While taking her to hospital, she told them that her husband had attacked her. She later died in hospital. - Special Correspondent

Accident toll up

KADAPA: Death toll in the lorry accident on Rapur ghat road in Chitvel mandal on Wednesday night rose to five with K. Gundaiah (18) succumbing to injuries while undergoing treatment in hospital at Tirupati. Three persons died on the spot and a woman succumbed to injuries on way to hospital. The accident occurred while they were returning from a marriage in Nellore.— Staff Reporter

Student run over

KADAPA: A student, Chatakonda Karunakar (15), belonging to Bothalapalle Harijanawada in B. Kodur mandal was run over by a lorry on the main road in Porumamilla town on Thursday. Another student Ravi sustained severe injuries. They were returning home from Porumamilla when the accident occurred. Lorry driver Devasahayam was taken into custody, Porumamilla Circle Inspector K.M. Rajendra said.— Staff Reporter

Lightning claims two lives

KADAPA: Two persons were killed in lightning in Kadapa district on Wednesday night. The two were identified as Anjaneyulu (24) of Palagiri village in Veerapunayunipalle mandal and Moole Adilakshmamma (45) of Akkampet village in Kasinayana mandal. In another incident, a buffalo also died when it was struck by lightning in Savisettipalle village in Kasinayana mandal.— Staff Reporter
