Two arrested for stealing mobile phones

Duo snatched sets from pedestrians

CHENNAI : Two persons, including a small-time actor, were arrested on charges of stealing mobile phones.

Police said following complaints that motor-borne thieves, who snatched handsets from pedestrians, were on the prowl in several residential areas, a special team was formed on the instructions from Commissioner of Police Letika Saran.

During a routine vehicular check, the Shastri Nagar police detained two youths who were identified as Sivasubramanian (26) and Kartikeyan (25) of Periyar Pathai, Kodambakkam.

Investigations revealed that Sivasubramanian, a native of Madurai, had come to the city four months ago and had acted in a small role in a recent Tamil film. Along with his friend Kartikeyan, he allegedly stole phones from people.

According to investigation officer V. Kavikumar, their modus operandi was to closely observe the movements of people who walked alone on streets talking on their mobiles. When the crowd on the street was less, they snatched the phones and fled from the scene on their two-wheeler.

It is suspected that the duo might have committed such offences in Besant Nagar, T.Nagar, G.N.Chetty Road, Tiruvanmiyur and Guindy. The investigation would look into various aspects including whether the duo had a connection with any gang and where they sold or hid the stolen handsets, the officer said.

A case of robbery was registered and the two were produced before a city court, which remanded them to judicial custody.
