Laying of pipeline delayed on S.A. Road

Staff Reporter

Traffic diversion likely to continue for a day or two

KOCHI: High water table and loose soil have slightly delayed laying of a pipeline across Sahodaran Ayyappan Road for the Hudco-Assisted Water Supply Augmentation Scheme of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA).

However, with the authority changing the work plan so as to overcome the problem, a delay of only a day or two is expected, says Susan Jacob, Chief Engineer (Central Zone), KWA.

The initial plan was to lay a 1,100-mm pipe at a depth of 3.5 metres. However, with the groundwater gushing out, the work became difficult, especially with the presence of loose sand. The trench started caving in, and hence KWA engineers had to change the plan.

Now, instead of a single 1,100-mm pipe, two pipes of 750 mm each will be laid, which will not change the quantity of water that can be pumped. The two pipes will be laid on top of a pipeline already there at a depth of 1.7 metres. The pipes were brought to the work site on Thursday morning.

Communication and power cables on the work site are also posing a problem. These have to be lifted to protect against possible damage. This has also slowed down the work a little bit, Ms. Jacob says. Even this is being affected by the high water table.

Earlier schedule

Under the earlier schedule, the work should have been completed by Saturday. Traffic on Sahodaran Ayyappan Road has been diverted for the work from last Friday night. The diversion should have lasted only till Thursday. The work is part of laying a pipeline from Elamkulam to Palluruthy along Sahodaran Ayyappan Road and K.P. Vallon Road, which is the 6-km last phase of the work.
