THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has said that the attempted assault on Thursday on a delegation of Congress leaders who visited Munnar to inquire about encroachments and unauthorised constructions clearly shows the involvement of CPI(M) leaders in the widespread land grab in the district. Taking strong exception to the incident in a statement here, Mr. Chandy pointed out that the assault took place when the KPCC delegation, led by the former MP Thalekkunnil Basheer, was visiting encroached areas near the S.N. Lodge at the heart of Munnar. The assault also showed that the Chief Minister's visit to Munnar to inquire about the issue was nothing but a farce. Although the Chief Minister ordered stoppage of unauthorised constructions in the area, there had been no let up in the construction activities.
Government's failure
This showed that the Government had bowed before the resort-land grab mafia. Encroachments and illegal constructions remained unabated only because of the involvement of CPI(M) leaders. Mr. Chandy urged the Government not to make the official-level inquiry into the encroachments a farce and warned of a strong agitation if the Government tried to use the probe to clear the names of encroachers.
