"Check corruption"

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Urging the Delhi Government to fix responsibility on officials who are to blame for the Delhi Transport Corporation's losses, Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president Harsh Vardhan has called for measures to check corruption in the Corporation.

In a statement, Dr. Vardhan said the Government could turn the DTC into a profit-making Corporation by adding 5,000 new buses to the fleet.

He suggested that the Government auction all the worn-out buses and add new ones to the fleet.

The BJP leader said while 4,500 Blueline buses were making a profit, the DTC, losing Rs. 23.79 per km in 2003-04, was now losing Rs. 54 per km. He alleged that such a big loss could not happen without "the connivance and loot" of officials. The DTC, he added, continued to make losses despite having all the facilities.

Dr. Vardhan also claimed "there is a great imbalance in the route operation of DTC buses".
