Knee replacement specially designed for women now

Bindu Shajan Perappadan

NEW DELHI: No longer will women need to make do with knee implants not specially designed for them. Available in the Indian market now for the first time is the "Zimmer Gender Solutions Knee Implant" exclusively designed for women.

The present day implants used for total knee replacement have never helped women in the real sense. When placing traditional implants, surgeons normally accommodate women's needs by removing more bone or repositioning the implant.

As a result, women are subjected to discomforting knee pain and weakened mobility.

Speaking about this latest women-friendly implant, Ashok Rajgopal, Director of Joint Replacement at Fortis Hospital who has used the Zimmer Gender Solutions Knee Implants on over 40 patients, said: "While working in the city I have used this implant on several patients in the past month and we have got very encouraging results. The cost of the new technology is only marginally higher but the benefits offered to patients opting for the technology are worth it. The implant allows the patient to regain movement of the limb faster. The pain after surgery is much less and since the implant is made according to the size of a woman's knee the incision required to fit it in is smaller. It is important that we recognise the distinct differences that exist at the knee when undergoing implant surgery and act accordingly."

The women-specific knee implant has been available globally for some time but has hit the Indian market very recently.

According to reports, the knee replacement now available to Indian women is shaped to fit a woman's anatomy and is based on three distinct and scientifically documented differences between the women's and the men's knees.

Better fit

This implant takes into account both shape and size features of a woman's knee, resulting in a better fit, higher flexion, and more natural movement.

"The implant uses existing, clinically successful surgical techniques and offers the user smaller scars, shorter hospitalisation and quicker recovery. The knee implant safely accommodates high flexion, which is necessary for many activities involving deep bending," added Dr. Rajgopal.
