`Bureaucracy blocking suo motu powers'

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: A section of the bureaucracy is blocking suo motu powers being granted to the Lokayukta for inquiring into cases of corruption and maladministration, according to Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde.

"I have reliably learnt about a few bureaucrats having taken a representation to the Chief Minister asking him not to grant suo motu powers. They fear that the power will be misused," Mr. Hegde said.

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy had favourably reacted to the proposal mooted by the Lokayukta and referred it to a Cabinet subcommittee. He said at a recent function that the committee would give the green signal.
