MADURAI: The Mullaiperiyar Dam Rights Retrieval Committee will stage a dharna in front of Public Works Department offices in Madurai, Uthamapalayam and Paramakudi on May 9, pressing the State Government to close shutters in the dam before the onset of monsoon. Talking to reporters here on Friday, its leader P. Nedumaran said that failure on part of Tamil Nadu to raise storage level to 142 feet by closing the shutters resulted in huge quantity of water flowing into the Kerala side in 2006. Pointing to a Supreme Court verdict allowing Tamil Nadu to raise the dam height, Mr. Nedumaran said that the State could file a contempt petition in the apex court if the Kerala Government tried to prevent it from closing the shutters. Mr. Nedumaran will lead the protest in Madurai.
