Special Correspondent

The animals are suspected to have been struck by lightning

KOLKATA: Five elephants, three female and two male, were found dead close to the banks of the Raidak in the Buxar forest reserve of West Bengal on Friday.

While wildlife officials are investigating the cause of the deaths, it is being surmised that the herd, which included calves, was struck by lightning. A post-mortem is being done. A three-member committee has been set up to inquire into the deaths, said Forest Minister Ananta Ray.
