`Ahimsa silk saris' attract visitors to Poompuhar expo

Minister inaugurates `Handlooms of India' exhibition

CHENNAI : A pretty bronze statue draped in `Ahimsa Silk' welcomed visitors at Poompuhar showroom on Anna Salai, where an exhibition of handlooms from 12 States began on Friday.

Rural Industries Minister Pongalur N. Palanisamy inaugurated the `Handlooms of India' exhibition featuring the traditional textiles handcrafted by 22 weavers from across the country.

All the stalls had something special to offer. Kalamkari printed cotton saris are this year's attraction. `Ahimsa silk saris' from Andhra Pradesh made without killing silk worms was a crowd-puller.

Cotton saris and dress materials with pattachitra and tribal art paintings from Orissa for handloom buffs looking for novelty, hand-embroidered cotton, silk kurtas and saris from Gujarat and the Madurai Sungadi saris were on display. Other attractions at the exhibition include Dharwad cotton saris, Lucknow chikan work, West Bengal cotton saris, Pochampalli and Mangalagiri textiles and Punjab phulkari handlooms.

For children, the range included chikan work cotton chemise, cotton ghagra cholis and kurtas, while for men the exhibition offers a wide variety of kurtas. An official said the exhibition is expected to record a sale of Rs.12 lakh. The exhibition will be on till May 21, including Sundays and offers a discount from 10 per cent to 20 per cent.
