NEW DELHI:
Taking a break from their classrooms and speaking for the trees, a group of faculty, students and staff from Delhi University's Institute of Economic Growth and Delhi School of Economics have written to the Vice-Chancellor asking him to reconsider the project of
The project would entail the felling of 1,000 trees around the University's sport ground.
Stating that such large-scale destruction of invaluable old trees would seriously damage Delhi University's green heritage and the city's already threatened environment, the group in its letter said: "As Vice-Chancellor, on whom rests responsibility for the University's long-term welfare, we urge you to protect these trees which are our heritage, and ensure that they are not sacrificed to short-term pressures.''
The appeal comes after faculty members of the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University wrote an open letter to their Vice-Chancellor expressing displeasure at the loss of green cover from its 105-acre campus located inside the Ridge Area.
The letter also notes that the beauty of the North Campus is because of its majestic trees and the diversity of species.
