NEW DELHI: It was Arjun Singh's day all the way at Jamia Millia Islamia here on Friday. Not only did the Union Human Resource Development Minister unveil a new building on the campus, a road and a new centre named after him were also inaugurated -- all within a span of few hours.

Before Mr. Singh inaugurated the brand new Noam Chomsky Complex on Friday evening, Jamia Teachers' Association president M. Rais Khan opened "Shahrah-i Arjun Singh" -- the road leading to Mujeeb Bagh Teachers' Housing Complex on the campus.

An hour before the Minister arrived for the main function, Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC) Sukhdeo Thorat inaugurated the "Arjun Singh Centre for Distance and Open Learning" as a gesture of gratitude for Mr. Singh's "contribution to the development of the University".

Thanks to the Ministry's special grant of Rs.40 crore to Jamia in 2004, the University has completed its first phase of construction and some new buildings will soon be ready for possession.

After opening the new Complex, Mr. Singh said: "It is indeed appropriate that this complex has been named after the leading linguist, writer and activist Noam Chomsky, whose commitment to critical enquiry, we wish our centres of learning and research to imbibe and propagate."

The Naom Chomsky Complex will house the Centre for Jawaharlal Nehru Studies, the Munshi Premchand Archives and Literary Centre and an International Boys' Hostel , announced Vice-Chancellor Mushirul Hasan on Friday. He also said a number of important centres would be constructed on the new road named after Mr. Singh.
