Puducherry
Special Correspondent
Puducherry: The Puducherry Assembly on Saturday urged the Centre to confer full-fledged powers on the Government. It also exhorted the Central Government to effect necessary amendments to the Constitution and Government of Union Territories Act 1963 to grant powers to the Assembly and the Government. A resolution to this effect was tabled by Chief Minister N. Rangasamy. The House also converted private member resolutions tabled separately by members of the DMK, the AIADMK, the CPI and the PMK as official ones. Mr. Rangasamy said there was every need for full-fledged powers for the Assembly and also the Government here. The present Government had been facing several problems for want of powers in implementing schemes on time. Earlier private member resolutions tabled separately by R. Viswanathan (CPI), R.K.R. Anandaraman (PMK) A. Anbalagan (AIADMK) and S.P. Sivakumar (DMK) made out a strong case for more powers or statehood for Puducherry. Participating in a debate, Local Administration and Tourism Minister Malladi Krishna Rao said Puducherry had been making phenomenal progress in all sectors. Mr. Rao, pledging his support to the demand for more powers for the elected government, said he would also persuade the President, the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister to use their good offices to ensure that Puducherry got full powers to carry out its schemes expeditiously.
