BIJAPUR: The coalition Government has been according top priority to the education sector to make the State a destination of global learning, Minister for Higher Education, D.H. Shankarmurthy has said. He was inauguratiung "Sristi - 2007," a four-day State-level exhibition on engineering models in Bagalkot on Friday. The State had made a giant stride in the field of higher education if the influx of foreign students was any indication, he said. Mr. Shankarmurthy said that the Government was opening 119 degree colleges across the State this year, and Rs. 1 crore each would be made available for the construction of new buildings. Government medical colleges would be opened in Raichur, Bidar and Shimoga, and engineering colleges in Chmarajnagar, K.R. Pet, Bellary, Ramnagar and Hassan. Mr. Shankarmurthy said it had been decided to open hostels in all districts this year for girl students pursuing higher education, and Rs. 75 lakh each would be released for each of them. The Government had decided to pay the fees of poor meritorious students who were pursuing higher education, he said. VTU Vice-Chancellor K. Balaveera Reddy said that the standard of education in India was no less than that of any advanced country. The country had moved far ahead in using satellites for education. There was immense progress in digitalisation of study material and paperless education was not far away, he said. Over 300 engineering models are displayed at the exhibition.
