Virudhunagar: Indian Bank, Chennai in defence of the men's title, recorded two wins, while Southern Railway, Chennai in defence of the women's title, registered its second win, in their respective semifinal leagues of the fifth annual Arokya Trophy State-level basketball tournament organised by Kamaraj Basketball Club at KVS HSS ground, Virudhunagar on Saturday.

St. Joseph's in last 16
St. Joseph's College, Tiruchi beat Nilgiris Police 3-2 to enter the pre-quarterfinals of the 24th Champion Club football tournament for the Universal Trophy organised by the Blues Football Club and Sivagangai DFA at the Krishna Stadium in Velangudi near Karaikudi on Saturday. Mohamed Habib scored in the 11th and 51st minutes and Prakash scored the third in the 76th minute for a 3-0 lead for St. Joseph's College. But Nilgiris Police men attacked strongly thereafter and in a space of seven minutes, Nandakumar scored two goals first in the 84th and the second in injury time but time robbed them of getting the equaliser. In another match, Youngsters Football Club, Avadi thrashed Blood Reds Football Club, Coimbatore 5-1 to enter the pre-quarterfinals. Ragupathy (19th minute), Saravanan (31st), Kishore Kumar (53rd), Jeffersan (70th) and Raghavan (76th) scored for Youngsters. Senthil (29th) scored the only goal for Blood Reds.
CR posts win
Central Railway, Mumbai beat LMR Basketball Club, Erode 69-16 in the inaugural match of the women's section of the Tamilnad Mercantile Bank Trophy All India basketball tournament at the Tharuvai Stadium, Tuticorin on Saturday.
The results: Central Railway, Mumbai 69 (Reena 22, Ombiny 14) bt LMR BC, Erode 16.
Balaji shines
An all-round performance by Balaji (54 runs and five for 45) helped KKRC Cricket Club chalk out a seven-run victory over Eleven Stars Cricket Club in the Madurai District Cricket Association First Division `B' zone league at Madurai recently.
The scores (First Division) `B' zone: KKRC CC 186 for nine in 40 overs (Balaji 54) bt Eleven Stars CC 179 in 37 overs (Arun 72, Balaji five for 45). `A' zone: Amigos CC 198 in 45 overs (Santhosh Gopi 62, Thirumurugan 46) lost to TVS CC 200 for eight in 36.2 overs (Srinivasan 40, D. Jeyshankar 69 n.o.).
Sachin holds Rathnakaran
Top-seeded K. Rathnakaran of Southern Railway was held to a draw by Sachin of Kerala in a third-round encounter of the second R. Ramasamy Gounder memorial FIDE-rated open chess tournament at Karur on Saturday.

Football tournament
The 42nd annual Moulana Abulkalam Azad memorial Trophy All India football tournament, organised by United Sports Club, will commence with a match between Karnataka Police, Bangalore and Universal Football Club, Calicut at the USC ground in Kayalpatnam on May 8.
