NEW DELHI: Ahead of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences Governing Body meeting here this Monday, the Institute's Faculty Association has pointed out that in the past one year not a single agenda item has been discussed with the welfare of the faculty in mind. "Only personal issues have been discussed during the Governing Body meetings so far and we suspect that issues relating to the welfare of the faculty will not be looked into again this time. Also, we object to all the meetings being held at Nirman Bhawan for some unknown reason,'' stated a release issued by the AIIMS Faculty Association here on Saturday.
Job uncertainty
The Association said that a letter from the Union Health Ministry had previously caused serious job uncertainty to more than 100 senior professors. "At the last Governing Body meeting held on January 24, a committee headed by the Health Secretary was formed to look into the promotions and seniority of faculty members as the Ministry had received various representations from the faculty members. There is no action on this, as the committee has not met even once, nor has the faculty's opinion on the matter been sought till today,'' they added.
`Institute autonomy hit'
The Association has also criticised the fact that "this is the first time in the history of AIIMS that the Director is not being allowed to prepare the agenda and all the items for the meeting have been sent by the Ministry. Also, minutes of the 2005 Governing Body meeting have not yet been approved,'' said an Association member, adding that the courts had remarked adversely on the functioning of the Institute Body and the Governing Body and
`Make report public'
The Faculty Association has also said that the M.S. Valiathan Committee formed to review the AIIMS functioning and make recommendations to improve it had not been made public and discussed.
"This poses serious doubts about the intentions of the Health Ministry. We demand that the Valiathan Committee report be made public immediately," it added.
