Former BSF cop held for murders

Staff Reporter

He was also a national wrestling champion

NEW DELHI: A 40-year-old former Border Security Force constable and two-time national wrestling champion has been arrested at Najafgarh here for alleged involvement in seven murders and several cases of attempt to murder and extortion. He carried a reward of Rs. 10,000 on his head.

Rajbir alias Raju, a resident of Jhajjar in Haryana, had won the National Wrestling Championship in 1983 and 1984 and landed a job in the BSF under the sports quota in 1985. While with the BSF, he got involved in an altercation with members of a rival camp in his native village and allegedly made a murderous attempt on one Mahavir Pehlwan.

An attempt-to-murder case was registered against him at the Sadar Bahadurgarh police station in 1994. Three years later he took voluntary retirement from the BSF and allegedly took to crime full-time.

"After seeking retirement from the force, Rajbir turned into a hard-core criminal and formed his own `Raju Gang' and was involved in several cases of murder, attempt to murder, extortion and land disputes," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Alok Kumar at a press conference here on Saturday.

In 2004, two murder cases were registered against Rajbir at the Rohtak and Bahadurgarh police stations. He allegedly murdered his rival Ramesh from his own village the next year.

In 2006, he along with his accomplices Kuldeep, Hardeep, Manoj and Jasbir allegedly locked up one Sanjay and his cousin in a room, doused petrol on them, and set them afire. Rajbir suspected the two to be police informers.

Two more persons were allegedly killed by Rajbir in gang rivalry the same year. In 2007, he allegedly murdered one Mahender of his village suspecting him of leaking information about his whereabouts to his rival gang members.
