NEW DELHI: As part of the first United Nations Global Safety Week, the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) turned its attention towards road users in an Uttar Pradesh village and imparted road safety training to them. The IRTE conducted various training programmes as part of Road Safety Week in the last week of April in its adopted village, Bhauti Pratappur in Kanpur. A four-member IRTE team conducted meetings and discussions with school children, villagers and heavy vehicle drivers. They also conducted various surveys to understand the level of traffic safety compliance among villagers. Keeping in mind the survey findings, the team chalked out various training programmes. They team sat along with Panchayat members, school principals, dhaba owners and a few villagers to chalk out the programme. The IRTE team conducted road safety training along with the Directorate of Traffic, U.P.
Training for kids
Training was imparted to school children and heavy vehicle drivers. The IRTE has been concentrating on young drivers as they form a vulnerable section of road users and the team at Bhauti Pratappur gave special training to the youngsters of the village. Audio-visual programmes on road safety were conducted day and night especially for them. The team along with the villagers also spent time painting the mudguards of all bicycles white. They also fixed reflective stickers on bicycles and tractors to improve visibility at night. It was followed up with a road show and a painting competition.
