`Pursue Central status for Sagar University'

Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL: Two days after Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan met Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh in Delhi and urged him to grant Central University status to Dr. Hari Singh Gaur University at Sagar, the State Governor, Balram Jakhar, also advised the University Vice-Chancellor, Dhirendra Pal Singh, to follow up the matter with the Centre.

The Chief Minister informed the Union HRD Minister during their meeting last Wednesday that a proposal for granting Central University status to Dr. Hari Singh Gaur University was already pending with the HRD Ministry. Seeking an early decision, Mr. Chauhan told Mr. Singh that the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) had given "A" Grade to Sagar University, which shows that the University is now at par with front-ranking universities like Madras University and Benaras Hindu University.

Meanwhile, Dr. Jakhar congratulated the University Vice-Chancellor for the excellent ranking by NAAC when he met him at Raj Bhavan here on Friday. During this meeting, the Governor was informed that Dr. Hari Singh Gaur University is the first university in the State to have been awarded an `A' grade.

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council has stated in its report that Sagar University has registered remarkable progress in every field.

Significantly, the State Minister for Industry and Commerce, Babulal Gaur, had told media persons in September 2004, when he was the State Chief Minister, that Mr. Arjun Singh wanted to give Sagar University the status of a National University.
