CHENNAI: There is vengeance, intrigue, plenty of tears and "violence acceptable at the drawing room level" lined up for viewers of Raj TV from Monday to Thursday. With Rs.20 crore allocated to developing new content each year, Raj Television Network Limited (RTNL) announced the launch of four new 200-episode serials, starting May 7. `Mahanadhi' begins at 8.01 p.m. prime time and promises to offer a kaleidoscope of emotions. Soon after, `Meenakshi' is scheduled for 8.30 p.m. Written by scriptwriter Indira Soundarajan, it offers plot twists and mystery. `Aaru Maname Aaru' is next (9 p.m.), starring actor Sita. Finally, there is `Gauravam' at 9.30 p.m., a saga about two women pitted against each other. In addition to these, there will be a one hour `Kiddies Hour' at 5.30 p.m., featuring shows for children. A new programme will be added every month, Raju Easwaran, COO-Creative of RTNL, told press persons here on Friday. He later told The Hindu that the decision on the serials was an attempt to move away from the "movie channel" image. The channel would, however, continue to bid for and purchase satellite rights for new Tamil films.
11 new channels
He said the company would launch 11 new channels over the next few months. The first will be a "youth" channel from September, which, according to him, would be very different from everything on air currently. And although it will be in Tamil, he said the new channel will have a pan-Asian look. Mr. Easwaran added that talks were on for RTNL to join the direct-to-home bandwagon. It was also working to make itself fully digital and do away with the tape format. RTNL would soon open its new 9,000 sq ft studio in the city with an initial investment of Rs.7.5 crore.
