`UDF trying to destroy hospitals'

Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Left Democratic Front (LDF) convener Vaikom Viswan has alleged that the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is trying to destroy Government hospitals, the only place for the health care of poor people in the State.

Mr. Viswan was inaugurating a seminar on "50 years of Kerala State," as part of the 39th State meet of the Kerala Panchayat Employees' Association at Muthoor, near Thiruvalla, on Saturday.

He alleged that the UDF move was to strengthen the private hospital lobby.

The Government had undertaken a serious mission to ensure effective functioning of Government healthcare centres, right from primary health centres to medical college hospitals, which had been weakened by the previous UDF Government.

Mr. Viswan alleged that the controversy over infant deaths at Sree Avittom Tirunal Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram and the Opposition demand for resignation of the Health Minister should be viewed in the backdrop of the UDF design against public health care centres.

Raju Abraham, MLA, presided. M. Gangadhara Kurup, former Public Service Commission chairman, V. Karthikeyan, SCERT director, P. Rajeev, Deshabhimani resident editor and the association leaders P.G. Gopi and K.P. Mohandas spoke.
