UDF to organise dharna on May 10

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The United Democratic Front (UDF) will organise a dharna in front of the Secretariat on May 10 demanding an investigation after keeping the Health Minister out of office into the death of several newborn babies owing to hospital infection in the SAT Hospital here. The State-level leaders and MLAs of the front will participate in the dharna, which will be inaugurated by Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy.

The UDF will observe the first anniversary of the LDF Government falling on May 18 as betrayal day. It will organise public meetings at the panchayat level and in the district centres in the evening as part of it. — Special Correspondent

Train to Gorakhpur rescheduled

Thiruvananthapuram: The 2512 Thiruvanantha- puram-Gorakhpur Raptisagar Express, scheduled to leave Thiruvananthapuram Central at 5.20 a.m. on Sunday, has been rescheduled due to late running of the pairing train.

According to a press release from Southern Railway here, the train would depart at 10 p.m. - Staff Reporter

Youth Congress plans human chain

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Youth Congress will be organising a `human chain' in the Pathrakadavu project area on May 23 in protest against the Government move to implement the project. Youth Congress State president T. Siddiq said that the about 10,000 Congress and Youth Congress workers and nature lovers would join the protest. The participants would take a pledge to protect the Silent Valley.

The State president recalled that the former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi were instrumental in the protection of the Silent Valley as a national park. — Special Correspondent

Malayali elected BCI Chairman

KOCHI: S. Gopakumaran Nair has been elected as Chairman of the Bar Council of India (BCI). This is the first time that a Malayali lawyer is elected to the post, said a press release from the Bar Council of Kerala here on Saturday.

Mr. Nair was twice chairman of the Kerala Bar Council and has been an elected member of the council since 1975. He is also an executive member of the National University of Advanced Legal Studies here, said a press release here on Saturday. — Staff Reporter

Award presented

KANNUR: The young talented artiste award instituted by the South Zone Cultural Centre, Thanjavur, was given to A.K. Sreejith of Yodha Kalaripayattu Academy at Payyannur. The award for the year 2006-07 consists of a medal and Rs.10,000. The award is for his performance in Kalaripayattu. A kalari trainer, Mr. Sreejith had bagged the State-level Thacholi Othenan trophy for the best kalari practitioner. — Staff Reporter

Governor in city

KOZHIKODE: Governor R.L. Bhatia will be in the city on Sunday. He will inaugurate the silver jubilee celebrations of Manassery Mohammed Abdu Rahiman Memorial Orphanage College at 10 a.m. and building for a special school at Mukkam Mambetta at 11.05 a.m. He will leave for Kochi from Calicut airport on Monday. - Special Correspondent

KOZHIKODE: Officials posted for the byelections in the districts on May 9 have been advised to report for duty at 9 a.m. on May 8 at the centre from where polling materials are to be distributed. The byelections are being held in wards in Koduvally, Ingapuzha, Onchiyam, Vellathkunnu, Velam, Karakunnu and Panangad - Karayathodi. - Special Correspondent

Nurses Week

KOZHIKODE: District-level Nurses Week celebrations will be inaugurated on Sunday at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital by Principal P.V. Ramachandran. The inaugural session will be followed by a continuing medical education programme on `health care for a bright future.'

Stray dogs captured

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Veterinary volunteers of the city corporation on Saturday captured eight stray dogs from the Museum premises.

Mayor C. Jayan Babu had issued directions to capture the dogs following media reports of people being bitten by dogs inside the Museum compound, said a pressnote.
