Battlelines drawn: Vanzara

Says charges against him were " concocted"

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat IPS officer D.G. Vanzara, who is in the eye of a storm over fake encounter killings, on Saturday said the charges against him were "interpolated and concocted."

A composed Vanzara, arrested in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, smiled at reporters when the CID brought him and the two other accused IPS officers, to a court here to seek further remand. Mr. Vanzara claimed that the allegations levelled against him in the Kausarbi case were "concocted." The Gujarat Government had admitted that the woman, wife of Sohrabuddin, was killed and her body burnt.

"The battle lines have been drawn," Mr. Vanzara said even though he did not spell out against whom.

Asked whether he still stood by his statement that Sheikh was a terrorist, he replied in the affirmative. "I have stated this even in a court of law." Asked how he spent his time in the lock-up, he said: "I am doing yoga. I also listen to and read the preachings of Asaram Bapu as I am his follower. There is no television to watch or newspaper to read."

Looking at the large media contingent, he said: "I know what you have been writing about me. But I have nothing against you all as I know it is nothing personal."

Rajkumar Pandian and Dinesh Kumar avoided the media.
