TAMBARAM: The Chennai Corporation will adopt the Pammal Municipality's model of solid waste management by implementing the method in one of the wards shortly, Mayor M. Subramanian said here on Saturday. He made the announcement after visiting the Zero Waste Centre of the Pammal Municipality at Visweswapuram, where the local body has been working along with Exnora and Pepsico for vermicomposting garbage generated in all its 21 wards. Mr. Subramanian told reporters that he was impressed with the solid waste management practices at Pammal. Plans would soon be drawn up to implement similar schemes in Chennai city after consulting Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin.
Survey planned
To begin with, Exnora would be asked to conduct a complete survey in his ward (No. 140) about the quantity of garbage generated and how they could implement the scheme. Earlier, prior to visiting the Zero Waste Centre, Mr. Subramanian toured the Pammal municipality areas, to take a look at the process of source segregation and secondary collection. Mangalam Balasubramaniam, president of the Pammal Exnora Innovators' Club, briefed the Mayor about the origin of the scheme and the process of conversion of kitchen waste into manure. More than 200 workers collect garbage generated at source from more than 25,000 houses. The municipality pays Exnora at the rate of 75 paise a day per each house. The Mayor inaugurated a plastic cutting machine at the centre. Among those present were V. Karunanidhi and B. Kandhavel, chairman and vice-chairman of the Municipality, and office-bearers of the Exnora including Sulochana Ramaseshan and R. Govindaraj. The Pammal Municipality set up the centre a couple of years ago, with financial support of Rs. 15 lakh from Pepsico.
