Plea to check traffic violations in city

Special Correspondent

The Capital City Development Forum has said that the accident rate in the city would go up unless basic safety measures are adopted.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Capital City Development Forum has accused the City Traffic Police of failure to crackdown on unauthorised parallel bus services and traffic offences such as haphazard parking and reckless driving. A pressnote quoting Forum secretary K.T. Roy alleged that the police were turning a blind eye to traffic violations.

It said private buses were allowed to park at the KSRTC platform at the city bus stand at East Fort for an extended period, violating the two-minute limit for boarding passengers.

"Private buses, autorickshaws and two-wheelers freely overtake through the left and take dangerous U- turns with total disregard for other motorists and road rules. Vehicles are often parked right on the zebra crossing and jumping signal lights is common. At busy locations such as Kesavadasapuram, Pattom and Vazhuthacaud, buses stop at the junction, holding up traffic while at other places, vehicles are parked right on the footpath. The police do nothing to prevent private buses from parking on the road between the Central railway station and the bus stand at Thampanoor," the pressnote said.

The Forum urged the Government to ensure that the roads dug up for laying cables and pipes are repaired within a reasonable time. It called for steps to ensure that trenches are properly barricaded and streetlights are functioning in the area.

The pressnote warned that the accident rate in the city would go up unless basic safety measures are adopted.

The Forum also alleged that vested interests were trying to torpedo the Vizhinjam container terminal project by triggering a protest against land acquisition.

It urged the Government to ensure proper rehabilitation for the families to be evicted for the project area.
