KOCHI: A group of 10 students and four teachers from Toc-H Public School, Kochi, feel proud to be Indians. Back in the city after a visit to the high school section of the National University of Singapore, they were in awe of the respect Indian students get in that country. Toc-H's Principal Sathi Ramachandran attributes this to the strong background that Indians have in mathematics. She said that the visit to the land of the Merlion (a statue with the head of a lion and the body of a fish, which has become synonymous with that country) was a once a lifetime experience for them. The Merlion was designed as the logo for the Singapore Tourism Board. The 10-day visit of the Kochi team coincided with the inauguration of NUS' high school. The Toc-H students presented a dance programme - a fusion of Kathak and Bharatanatyam. "The dance was well appreciated by the Education Minister of Singapore," says Ms. Ramachandran. The students attended regular classes along with their Singapore counterparts and participated in co-curricular activities. The visiting teachers, comprising Ms. Ramachandran, school president P.J. Joseph and two teachers - Biju Sundaram and Molly Mathew, observed the way of teaching. They also participated in social programmes and were put up at the NUS hostel.
